Support Verify you can reach I.T. and other support organizations on which you normally depend. Check to see that you can reach them even whenthey are working from outside the office. Do they have a pager or cell phone number you can use to reach them? Do they have a website for finding answers or starting a support ticket? Do they have an email address you can send to from any computer or device? 4. Work environment Is there a quiet place in your home or at your remote site where you can focus on work? Or conduct phone calls without too much background noise or interruptions? Do you have a clear work area where you can spread out your materials and equipment for a day or more? If you have others at home like a spouse or children, talk with them before your workday starts and set an expectation of when it is OK to interrupt you and when they should leave you to your work. 5. Security Check with your I.T. department for the standards and best practices for doing company or agency work at home and for accessing or storing documents while you're out of the office. If you'll be working somewhere other than at home, review your company's property policy and what to do in case something goes missing or is stolen. Test to make sure your laptop or other work devices have automatic screen savers with logout for the times you leave your machine unattended for more than a minute or two. Practice intentionally logging out when you get up from your desk. 6. Communication How will you keep up with your colleagues and your boss when you're working outside the office? Practice calling, using chat or holding a webcam video chat. Keep a list of the phone numbers, chat handles, and email addresses of the people with whom you'll need to communicate. 7. Practice and Refine Well before you actually need to use these tips and your organization's plan, practice working from home or your remote location to discover what more you need to prepare in order to have a smooth, easy, productive work environment and communication setup. Practicing these steps and performing actual work and collaboration from your remote location will help dramatically when winter weather does strike and you end up really working from home.
