Utilize chat and video conferencing services for collaboration. Provide your workers with the technology they need to be mobile and to do their best work. Make it easy for them to find a place to work wherever they need. 4. Train managers and teleworkers Overcoming the fear of change and then making the telework environment effective requires leadership, solid examples and training for both managers and workers. Maintaining productivity and morale are fundamental to successful telework programs and that requires specific training. Offer Training that instructs managers how to collaborate, encourage and communicate with their teleworkers, but also teaches the teleworkers how to remain part of the team, how to interact and communicate with their peers and managers using technology. 5. Maintain productivity The challenge facing organizations with teleworkers is keeping the teams communicating and the individuals engaged. A traditional office environment, while more costly and less flexible, does offer the unplanned, informal communication of water cooler talk, over-the-shoulder questions and impromptu meetings. These all contribute to engagement and collaboration. When implementing a more efficient, more flexible telework program, it must still keep the workers engaged and everyone headed toward the right goal regardless of whether they are in proximity for these short, ad hoc meetings. 6. Implement workplace flexibility Introducing alternative schedules such as flexible hours or compressed work weeks have clearly shown improvements in employee effectiveness, health and career growth. Telework and hoteling are not only perfect compliments for workplace flexibility; their combination gives TMO's excellent tools for making the office and agency a more attractive, productive place to work. It's just as important on the HR side of the workplace coin as it is on the real estate and IT side. When you implement the right combination of telework, alternative schedules, and shared desk reservations you get to cost-savings nirvana of 95% utilization at the same time you improve the attractiveness of the workplace. Employees will be happier, healthier and more engaged.
